“Like every year, the swifts return to their homes in the sleeping districts. But this year the humans are gone, leaving nothing but spirits.”

Swifts is a post-human tale, challenging the human-centric perspective that’s so typical in animated films. Through the lens of animation, it imagines the world of swifts, thriving within environments once associated with humans.

Inspiration for the film came from observing swifts in Lasnamäe, Tallinn’s so-called “sleeping district”. In the summer months, swifts are ruling the skies above the area. They utilise the cracks and crevices of post-Soviet blocks for nesting, adapting the decaying concrete to their advantage. Their crumbling walls provide secure and consistent habitats for these birds.

Melbourne International Animation Festival:

“Right on deadline were sent “Swifts” (...), Stylistically it’s markedly different than any of the other new EKA films and broadens the scope of what is being produced there by students from all over Europe.”
